For this performance we have decided to explore the idea of God acting as a father towards a certain individual rather than others, someone who is fortunate enough to be receive generosity from God but has exploited it and as a result he must face the consequences.

when developing this our central question ended up similar to ” is unconditional love a wrong” or ” what is it to have freedom”For characters such as John’s, he plays as Vincent  the one who has taken his prestigious life for granted and must face Gods fury. Its mostly centred around Vincent’s redemption. He also posses a strong firm belief in the idea of a God watching over him and everyone else.

There is also the Warden and the cell mate, minor characters who’s  appearances purpose is to belittle and break the the main characters from the inside stating the lack of his worth and challenging his faith without remorse.

Finally there is the almighty “God” of the performance God. The one who gave Vincent the life of a king and like any other parent who’s child lost their way he is not only disappointed in the child but himself , as it is said in the performance vince was stuck and its his fault but unlike other parents he has to he has to inform divine punishment upon his son before he can be redeemed.

In the beginning God seems very angerd and vengeful  but as the performance moves on his attidude and way of thinking change to something more realistic like an actual parent instead of an all powerful being who has no time for such “trivial” things.

To help represent who has the power of the stage or who the audience should be focusing on at certain moments we have them at the front of the stage for the majority of their lines we also kept a box at the centre of the stage for the passive character, the one who has to listen or is reduced to listening , for example at beginning when God first introduces his dilemma and the plot of Vincent’s redemption this technique was also  used to represent the wardens power over the former high class citizen, to help  the audience understand  how low the this certain individual has fallen, its also used to show the level of threat that the cellmate posses not only to vince p physically but to his strong faith in once again living a life with no worries. To summarise which ever character is at the front of the stage will always have control of the scene and the current situation.

In the aspect of the audience and performance space as I’ve said before the audience will always be within almost face to face reach in different scenes which will help them identify which character is in total control of each scene, we’ve also kept in mind that some parts of audience will be at different angles so we’ve tried to make our movements well orbiting the box in the centre. This way will be an unbiased presentation of the use of our performance space during.

The impact I intend to leave upon the audience I am not yet sure myself but I do hope to at least spark their interest, perhaps make them think if their much like vince taking something great and then abusing and exploiting it for their own selfish reasons or could even help could prevent other people or even themselves from ending up in this kind of situation where redemption is needed. if this could leave a big enough impression and actually help someone who considers themselves to be taking something or someone for granted that will be enough of an impact.

when improvising our performance we began with the idea of a powerful being and lower life forms being at their mercy, we obtained this from a story involving a child, toys being at his mercy  and them desiring their freedom from the idea of freedom we moved on to an individual wanting his freedom from God but then we changed it to someone provoking and actually deserving of Gods wrath. this evolved into the creation of the character Vincent and how he earns his name  after exploiting his gifts from above, we also explored the famous story of jesus if he lost his way and angered his father instead of dying  for peoples sins according to the christian belief and thought of the opposite result of the christians lord and savour, this is how the idea of “jesus” who lost his ways who was in serious need redemption came to exist in our performance, after we explored and repeated the idea  a few times with slight changes each time to develop our final result of a performance we repeated it a second time to polish and perfect it I believe this is an example planned improvisation.

The genres of this performance is centred around improvisational type which  we had to create from slightly related text  this type of theatre is often comedic but in this case possible a very dramatic scenario of as I’ve said before if the position of the son of God was taken by selfish and sees themselves as high born, we also kind of explored epic theatre genre involving an actual actor to play God in the performance and actually interfering with an individuals personal life to teach  them a lesson.  Our performance style involved non-natualistic elements as we found a way to keep all performers on the stage without confusing the audience which scene incorporated which actor, we also subtly used red and white bloody sheets to kind of represent the beginning of Vincent’s suffering as part of his redemption which is torn of at the beginning of the performance. We’ve also incorporated abstract theatre into our performance for example when Vince is has his faith challenged by his cellmate they do not face each other  while in conversation but the audience to show the anger and ridiculousness that the cell mate express towards Vince’s backtalk.

The conventions we use for example was conversation such as between Vince and the warden who purpose is to suggest to the audience that they should feel sympathy towards the main character another example of conventions we used was narration, we used the existence of the almighty God in this performance to our advantage and gave him the power of narrating the performance    which helped the plot continue and what it demands.

One way we used the semiotics of theatre and drama was within the scene after Vince’s imprisonment when a random per on decides to try and befriend him he immediately rejects and pushes this individual away without knowing it was one of hiis father’s attempts to help Vince redeem himself without any pain or suffering but of course that wasn’t the case. We decided to use costumes to help symbolise  the mood and situation of the characters for example the God of our performance will be dressed in a suit to represent his extremely higher status than everyone else at all times, Vince will also be wearing a suit to show his status but soon have it taken away and replaced with a plain white T-shirt to show that his status has fallen considerable low. Another way we use semiotics was how were used our dialogue as a signal for example when Vince has his high status costume taken the trigger word is “Darkness” during Gods rant. Also after Vince has his epiphany and apologises for his action God will let the audience know that he has finally earnt his name and freedom.

After the performances my group was told on how we could improve and expand upon. And that’s what we needed to do expand our performance and fleshing out our characters, it was stated that we also needed less symbolism and more naturalistic moments.

My evaluation of another drama groups performance, Louie’s group. In my opinion they had a great performance the did well in showing the audience the story of a man who accidentally beat his unfaithful wife to death and involves his “loyal” brother who refuses to help him. They could have attempted to show or give a representation of this mans wife because so far all I know is she’s a nice person also why does he claim that she is this nice person even after he finds out she was cheating on him.

working record

The stimulus material given to me is about a organisation called project prevention, a particular member named Barbra Harris  has  claimed to help prevent the extremely young (infants) from becoming addicted or involved with drugs, which I agree is a noble cause but what would disagree with is their complete disregard for the drug addicted parents. you see in order for them to prevent children from being born affected by illegal substances they pay drug addicted women to be sterilized and if their pregnant, abort their unborn child. In opinion these people and what they do compared to what they say is at the very least is questionable.project prevention tried to establish itself in the UK many times but was not allowed until 2010 however it was allowed in the US as soon as it was created, this alone proves that america is more accepting of controversy than us.   If I were to meet anyone within this group I would ask why not try helping people right here and now who are addicted to drugs instead of basically taking away potential lives, they obviously have more than enough funding to do so and this would be a more solid and potentially perm init solution instead of tempting these poor souls to make even more mistakes than they already have with their lives. project prevention is covered in contradictory and should not be allowed to take advantage of the weak and preform these eugenic treatments on them.

Item 1: my groups performance is about a young girl named Samantha and a quick show of her development from a pressured model citizen to a lowly abuser of drugs and desperate for help to get her life on track. this is linked to project prevention cause when she is on the edge of desperation she seeks out help from project prevention but before she makes the same mistake as many other women before her she refuses and goes to an AAA meeting to discuss her problems. In this performance I played as Samantha’s father who had so much pride in his child that it caused her to feel pressure about letting her father down, if this was to be developed we would of shown the fathers reaction if Samantha lowered her standards and his pride in her getting over her drug addiction. this is linked to the stimulus  because it represents someone who was able to escape their shady acts.

Item 2: In the first part my presentations I discussed the development of the characters and the plot if we were given the time to preform a full length performance.

1. I would have liked to spend more time on Samantha’s development from an upstanding person to a drug addict .

2. I would’ve liked to establish and develop the relationships she has with her father and James.I could do this by incorporating the use of space within the characters, for example if the characters distance themselves from each other then it would show that their relationship is also distant.

3. also to show how and why James became addicted to drugs? ,did Samantha know about his addiction?, how did this affect her and their friendship?, were they still friends while he was on drugs?

4. when Samantha was on drugs did her father know?, if so what was his reaction?

questions I would like to find out and answer.

Item 3: In the second part of my presentation I discussed my groups use of our props, the meaning and how they link to project prevention.

1.we used the setting of an NA meeting in background for all the scenes as a way to separate the preforming actors from everyone else on the stage we made it clear who was acting to the audience this way also it helped us keep all actors on stage at all times.

2. we used a blood covered blanket many times also. it was first used to represent the birth of Samantha and as she grows up it always appears in the use of something else in her life, it was also used as a symbol of project prevention’s blood shed of the unborn and their shady treatments on women.

Personally I would evaluate my groups performance as very effective way to express how and what could cause people to turn to drugs while indirectly or ignoring my groups central question.” Is addiction a choice”.using our performance I’d like to think that the audience will come up with their own answer.personally I think the NA meeting background setting worked well along with another non-naturalistic technique we used to show Samantha escaping project prevention’s clutches. we could have improved the way we established the friendship between James and Samantha and how they developed.

Jacks groups performance was very effective showing project prevention disregard for drug addicted women it also show the inhuman procedure that these poor souls are reduced to. effectively proving that project prevention is not the right  solution. they represent this using  very disturbing and gory methods for example they show the treatment with the women on their back while having I’m assuming their unborn children ripped out of them, which i wouldn’t put pass the organisation.   the acting of the women’s agony and the gore was very effective. they could have acted a bit more natural in some scenes, it was very effective in others but in my opinion to non-naturalistic.

My name is Gina and I’ve decided to ask the bank for a loan for my sisters treatment and her daughter,I’ve also decided go to rehab to help me beat my drug addiction and  get a job so I can provide for my niece( if i can’t raise enough money for my sisters treatment then i can at least take care of family I have left right?), I wasn’t in the right mind to make big decisions back then, it was drug induced actions .the money that  project prevention provided didn’t help me much. only as a temptation to buy more crack and for what ,the potential life of my child, my niece’s potential cousin gone and no chance for another. After that I promised never to put myself or anyone I love into that kind of situation again and to never go to project prevention for half-ass answers either.

Project prevention in my personal opinion are overrated. They only focus on preventing drug addicts from consieving any children. Which is a Nobel cause but can be so more effective if they gave a crap about the people on drugs instead of taking advantage of them. Project prevention pays drug addicted women up to £300/$500 after they are sterilised, which will most likely lead to them buying more drugs and after that money’s gone they will do anything to reach their next high, even resorting to selling drug themselves on impressionable teenagers, which can lead to more unwanted pregnancies to eventually more abortions and sterilising for money to get more drugs and a cycle is created. This is off the top of my head but how about spending time, effort and money(because they clearly have so much to pay a lot of druggies to get sterilised) to help them beat their addictions which would fix and stabilise their lives( including mental health). And Hopefully these people will become responsible, productive members of society and if they also happen to become parents well your job in preventing drug affected children is done. Just by giving drug addicted women a little help it can instantly help the young.

Drama HW

My name is Gina I am 18 and I believe life is no longer worth living. Last month my bastard of a father abandoned me, my 20 year old sister and her two year old daughter, this is only the beginning. Recently my sister was diagnosed with cancer and would die within three weeks if not treated, unfortunately for us ever sense dad left we’ve barley been able to survive. There’s no one who could help us. Knowing I was going to left alone raising a child when i can’t be responsible for myself, I just needed a way to escape so… I took some heroin and it was glorious but I couldn’t stop there so tried so … I tried heroin and I became addicted ,but I couldn’t stop there so I also took some cocaine, crack, angle dust and magic mushrooms. Five days later I found out I was pregnant, my heart skipped a beat while me entire body filled with fear. I couldn’t bring a child into this world knowing its horrible future so I had an abortion and got myself sterilized.

From a performance about addicted women and project prevention. I have seen and participated in a few, the one most recent is about a woman who’s addiction costs her, her child which leads to a debatable suicide at the end. One creative technique we used was having other people say horrible things that could’ve been said to her in her past and repeat it to show the woman slipping into madness and then judgemental thoughts are said in response to her  foolish decisions to regain sanity but fails.

For staging it was made clear who Focus should be on by having the drug addicted woman in front except for when she gets herself sterilise hidden away from the audience, to signify project preventions shady ness. The performance slightly taps on the possibility that project prevention is only a short term solution not in any way trying to help the people dangerously addicted to drugs to insure the child be happy with the one who are supposed to look after them.

The group could’ve brought more attention to the actual programme that claims to help and care for children who are  involved with drugs.

Bare vexed

I disagree with Isabelle Kerr, the language the youth use is for specific reasons and displays creativity. They use slang because it excludes other people and is used in personal relationships.

She claims to be a part of the young generation when she is in fact older than the people that use these words. Isabelle Kerr is a hypocrite because when she was younger she most likely used slang and spelled words differently without using proper English.

She also states Shakespeare would be turning in his grave, but Shakespeare himself was very creative with language and invented his own words which was considered genius among his peers and future generations still appreciate his work. He would be proud of this creativity. Shakespeare alone created 1700 common words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives, connecting words never before used together, adding prefixes and suffixes, and just making up new words completely such as addiction, champion, cold-blooded and rant. It is very ignorant for her to disrespect the younger generations creativity just because she isn’t intelligent enough to understand it.

She also thinks younger people talk this way all the time however it is just with friends they still know how and when to talk standard English. The language the youth use represents their culture, their background and where they are from, who is she to disrespect this.

“Regardless the future of the English language looks bleak” Isabelle Kerr states but I strongly disagree. As the times change obviously the language naturally develops as well, with new inventions and technology comes new phrases and sayings that young people will use while others will be oblivious. For instance ‘Selfie’, this is a new word created because of technology, it describes the act of taking a photo of themselves so the word ‘Selfie’ follows on from that quite logically. Young people also refer to exciting and enjoyable things as ‘live’ this also makes perfect sense as they are describing their enjoyment is causing them to feel full of life. Conversely if something is boring or dull it would be referred to as ‘dead’.

I find it ironic how she quotes people from twitter, which is a platform that only allows you to use 140 characters which encourages people to become creative with language. Yet she later states her anger at people who use abbreviations such as ‘srsly’ instead of writing the whole word, which would waste characters on twitter. Twitter is where ‘smh’ originated, it stands for ‘shake my head’ a term used to express disappointment, ‘smh’ allows you to express those feelings without taking up a lot of space, it is a necessity in the world of twitter.

To summarise I have explained why I strongly disagree with Isabelle Kerr and the pointless argument she puts forward. I see creativity and expressive language used by young people, I don’t see disrespect and stupidity as she continuously states. Lastly I believe Shakespeare himself would be proud of this language that they use.

I can tell you now

I can tell you now that nothing annoys me more than being treated unfairly and when people who think they have authority contradict themselves, I have had lots of experience with this.

During my RE class I may have let a slightly inappropriate word be heard by the teacher, although I wasn’t the only one who uttered this word the person sitting next to me did say it as well. I was given a detention while he got away with it. At the end of the day I went to his class to do this detention but I see the RE teacher lock the door, walk past me and wave. I presumed that he was letting me off, oh how wrong I was. I find out during the next couple of weeks he’s chasing me down for missing the detention trying to now give me an hour after school; double the initial detention. After that I went to his room asking how this had happened and how he had the nerve to say to me that I missed the first one, I was shocked and slightly angry at this injustice. In the end we agreed to do the initial 30 minute detention, but the whole situation angered me. In my next few lessons with him, people around me were swearing more than I ever did and apparently it was okay for them to do it  without any consequence. To this day I still don’t like him because of a mistake on his part that he wasn’t willing to acknowledge.

Another occasion when a teacher has contradicted themselves to my misfortune was when my Art teacher told the class that we don’t have much time to finish off our final pieces and books (these are important pieces of work for our GCSE’s) on the same day I asked her to take a look at my work and tell me what I needed to improve, after being assured multiple times that she would do this it was 3 weeks before I had any feedback. She repeatedly informed us we only had 2 weeks left of working time, this was 5 weeks ago and we’re still working, I wouldn’t have rushed my work if I knew the true amount of time we had left, thus affecting the quality of my work. As well as this at the beginning of each lesson she proceeds to monologue for at least 10 minutes explaining how little time we have ironically taking up a lot of it.

On many occasions I face the same issue with my parents of them contradicting themselves and holding me to a higher standard than they hold themselves. For example when I lost my earphones, when I told my mother she went into a lecture of how irresponsible I was to be losing things at my age, especially things of value. She eventually offered to lend me hers, however, after taking a lengthy period of time trying to find hers I asked her “Have you lost yours?” she replied in a nervous voice that she had just misplaced them, this made me roll my eyes in disbelief. After being on the receiving end of some verbal abuse, It felt so good being able to dish some back. This angered me because she expects things of me that she can’t even do herself.

These are only a few examples of when I’ve felt angered by being on the receiving end of unfair treatment.

Now and Then coursework

I’m in Year 7, like any other place on your first few days I am afraid. I can feel peoples eyes digging deep into me, every time I pass someone older than me in the corridor I feel as if I am giving off the scent of weakness.

In this foreign environment where I have no clue how things are run how the elders interact with everyone else in the school, some of them don’t pay attention to me like I’m not worth their time, the others give me threatening looks. I feel uncertain of my near future. Everything from teachers to students to even the hallways, are gigantic and intimidating. I’m starting to think that the pristine, expensive uniforms are to compensate for the near run down building, when I look up at the ceiling there are literally pieces missing like someone has taken bites out of it.

I look to my side where I usually find my friends who I used to have fun with but they have been replaced with total strangers, people who I know nothing about and don’t really care for. Lunchtimes are chaotic, we are separated and put in our own smaller playground. It’s like we are sheep being herded into a small pen and because no-one knows each other that well, fights often break out, unfortunately I am involved in one or two and they got violent. I need to learn to control myself.

My new teachers voice, when raised is like nothing I have heard before. My eardrums are being blasted by his bellowing voice as I try to comprehend what he is saying. I’m also not prepared for the pips that signalled the end of this lesson, as the speakers burst with this sharp noise, I have to cover my ears. It was an instinct, I didn’t even realise I’d done it.

As each day passed by, I become less intimidated and began to grow familiar with my surroundings…

These days as a year 11 student at the school I feel very secure as an individual. This security allows me to be more confident in class and in the hallways. Now as I see the young boys in Year 7 I find them very irritating. Their high pitch loud voices are like when someone is scraping their fingernails on a blackboard. My annoyance grows each time they become my obstacles trying to walk down the hallway.

As I get off the bus and see the school my eyes don’t hurt as much as they use to, it’s now like a relaxing cool breeze over my face as I feel much less aggravated than I used to when I arrive. Also now familiar to me is the scent of belonging every time I enter the school, quite often that means an unpleasant smell, but familiar none the less! It has become second nature to recognise each other’s clothing just by their aroma, It’s strangely amazing how each one is different and distinctive.

Being in Year 11 has its privileges, I can now leave at lunchtime to get my own food, thus avoiding the horrible stench and taste that comes from the schools kitchen. I almost feel sorry for the younger kids being subjected to this bland low-budget food that is served. It’s also nice to get out just to avoid the lunch hall, it’s almost like feeding time at the zoo, with the loud monkeys throwing food and the larger starving elephants barging their way to the front of the queue as if they’d find something edible.

As my days at this place are coming to an end I have noticed I have matured, especially controlling my temper and not resulting to violence. All in all even though through the four years here I’ve had vastly different experiences they have all helped me in some way…I guess.

Controlled Assessment-Shakespeare, studied poets & fate

How does Shakespeare and the studied poets use literary techniques to communicate their ideas about fate?

Literary techniques are used in Romeo and Juliet, Ozymandias and A Song In A Storm to help represent many different messages about the three authors ideas of fate and how fate affects the characters in these poems/stories. Fate in Romeo and Juliet is used as a plot device to help move the story along until the end. In the series of events that are usually hard to explain or don’t happen naturally it is described as fate. In Ozymandias by Persy Shelley and A Song in a Storm by Rudyard Kipling fate is described as death and shows no matter how legendary or important an individual thinks they are they are still mortal to fate.

Iambic meter is used in the poem Ozymandias by Persy Shelley to relate to the idea of fate as it is continuous through the poem just like fate carries on through life. For example ‘Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay’ these lines contain Iambic meter. This shows fate does not spare even those who think themselves as superior as Ozymandias refers to himself as King of Kings. Often Iambic meter is related to time ticking on and on and never stopping so even a great king with a kingdom will eventually become nothing, it is everyone’s fate to eventually die and fade away.

A Song in a Storm by Rudyard Kipling also uses the language feature of Iambic meter. This time it is used to relate to fate as nature giving the ship obstacles continuously, as there is a strong possibility fates intention is to have the ship crash. This is shown in the poem ‘In jeopardy we steer. Then welcome Fate’s discourtesy whereby it shall appear.’ This quote displays how fate will not allow the ship to escape its ultimate fate, which is to crash. ‘In jeopardy we steer’ shows how the ship are trying get away from their troubles. The quote then goes on to explain how fate will continue to put obstacles in the ships way. This is written in Iambic meter because their battle is never-ending, they cannot defeat fate, which is nature in this poem, as it is a relentless force that will not stop.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet also has examples of using Iambic meter as a language device for fate. This play was written in Elizabethan times, this was an era when the whole society strongly believed in Christianity and God. This meant that the idea of fate and God controlling people’s fate was considered believable by them. The Iambic meter is comparable to a heartbeat, most would think Iambic would be connected to the romance of the story, as hearts are linked with love. However, I believe it is a little deeper than that, almost counting down time using the rhythm of Iambic meter, for how long Romeo and Juliet have left to live, as we know from the Prologue that Romeo and Juliet are going to die. Therefore the Iambic meter is directly related to Romeo and Juliet’s fate. Iambic is evident straight away in the play, used throughout the Prologue “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life.” This quote, written in Iambic relates to the fate of Romeo and Juliet, it clearly states that they will not survive the play because of the grudge between their two families. So as the iambic is used from the beginning of the play it is the start of the clock running down for their lives and it is like a beating heartbeat that is constant as long as they are still alive. As the play ends, the Iambic ends which also means Romeo and Juliet have met their fate, death.

The narrative of Romeo and Juliet doesn’t just place the reader at the beginning of the story but explains the plot and how fate is used as a device in Shakespeare’s work. In the prologue we are told that these two rival families are always in conflict but the prologue predicts that one person from each family will end the fighting between the families with their death. This quote from the prologue “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life” shows us that even before the story begins, we already know what fate has in store for these two characters. “I fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars”. Throughout the narrative of this story, fate is often used to describe the situations that occur.

Furthermore fate is used when Friar Lawrence arrives late to the Capulet tomb he was literally seconds away from preventing the death of Romeo and Juliet because on the way he kept on stumbling. To think that the path that Romeo and Juliet were taking was taking them towards their death and could have been prevented by a seemingly everyday insignificant reason. The amount of tragedy could have been avoided if Friar Lawrence wasn’t stumbling is represented as a true act of fate by Shakespeare. “Saint Francis be my speed! how oft tonight have my old feet stumbl’d at graves! Who’s there?” This is one of Shakespeare’s many ways of showing how strong he believes in fate.

Also when Friar Jon was trying to deliver a message for Friar Lawrence to tell Romeo of his plan for Juliet, Friar Jon wasn’t able to deliver it because a town he had to pass through had all been infected with a diseases and the all doors were sealed off. Friar Jon says “Where the infectious pestilence did reign, seal’d up the doors, and would not let us forth, so that my speed to Mantua there was stay’d” In the time of the play was set people believed that God controlled who got sick and who was healthy. Therefore God is directly affecting the fate of Romeo by not allowing this message to get to him, forcing him to believe Juliet is really dead ultimately leading him to suicide. This is required because fate’s ultimate plan, as set out in the prologue, is for Romeo and Juliet to die in order to stop the two families rivalry.

The events in Ozymandias are linked to fate as the poem is talking about the past and how Ozymandias used to be a King of Kings and is now reduced to trunkless legs of stone standing alone in the desert. The poem describes Ozymandias as a ruler of a glorious kingdom. The phrase ‘King of Kings’ demonstrates his ultimate power. However as time goes by his power is reduced to nothing, if it wasn’t for this crumbling statue it would be as if Ozymandias never existed. The events present us with this idea that time will catch up with anyone and everyone, time, and more importantly, fate, does not discriminate.

In A Song in a Storm events present the idea of fate as the ship and the crew are being forced to fight through a storm to reach their destination. In the poem, fate is presented as the ocean because it is attacking and making obstacles for the ship. “Almost these mindless waters work as though they had a soul”. By saying this the author is implying that the ocean is against them following the idea of fate. During the poem the author is possibly implying that fate is testing them by creating more obstacles and giving more value to the journey. I was given the idea by this quote “We can make good all loss except the loss of turning back.” Sending the message that only those who refuse to turn back are worthy. The events have given us the idea that those of tenacity will survive and fate will decide what happens to the others.

In conclusion all 3 authors, Shakespeare, Shelly and Kipling have used various literary techniques to convey their ideas about fate. As we have discussed in Romeo and Juliet the literary technique of Iambic meter is present throughout. It is used to act as a heartbeat from beginning to end, as it stops at the end it symbolises the death of both Romeo and Juliet. We know that death is their fate from the prologue, so whatever they try to do in the play we know they can’t escape their fate, which is death. Also in Romeo and Juliet metaphors are used as a device for fate. Most notably Romeo refers to himself as a ship and wants to be steered by God who in this metaphor is the captain, the controller of fate. Even though he fears a series of events will lead to his death he allows God to steer him on his course anyway, he has no objections to Gods will. Lastly some events of the story which may seem hard to believe would be put down to fate. The fact Romeo goes to the party, as a servant who couldn’t read showed him the guestlist thus ultimately introducing him to Juliet can be put down to fate. Also Friar Lawrence asking Friar Jon to deliver an important message to Romeo only for Friar Jon to be interrupted by a sudden plague that caused a town to be placed in quarantine is also fate. Another significant moment which made the prologues prophecy fulfilled was when Romeo committed suicide just in time for Juliet to witness his final moments. This then caused her then to take her life, thus ending the feud between the families “And the continuance of their parents’ rage, Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove.”

Ozymandias by Persy Shelley also uses different ways to represent their ideas of fate. The use of Iambic meter is also present, like in Romeo and Juliet. This time it’s used to act as a countdown, like a ticking clock counting down until his kingdom develops into nothing as time or fate goes by. Showing no matter how much someone thinks of themselves they share the same fate, death.

A Song in the Storm is a poem by Rudyard Kipling which represents fate as the ocean which either wants to stop or even test if the people on the ship are worthy or not. Creating all those obstacles using the ocean as well as a representation of fate.
